Slow Samba network shares with Vista

I noticed that my Samba network shares across the internet or a VPN were painfully slow to copy files and perform directory listings on Windows Vista.

I learned that a possible cause was the Windows feature 'Remote Differential Compression', which is intended to allow file copies to be performed by just sending differences. Fine for large files that don't change much (typical of the horrible inefficiencies that dog Microsoft software), but no good for most things that I do.

So, I disabled this feature and my network operations have been running quickly ever since. You might want to try this: -

Go to Control Panel -> Programs and Features and choose 'Turn Windows features on and off'. Uncheck 'Remote Differential Compression' then click OK (and wait 5 minutes for Windows to churn away!), then test to see if your Samba shares speed up.
